STEVEN R. SYLVESTER MEMORIAL LIBRARY

Our library is named in honor of Steven R. Sylvester, a former student of South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary (SFBC&TS). Steven was enrolled at SFBC&TS from 1996 until his untimely death in 2000. The President, along with our Board of Directors, wanted to honor Steven and dedicate the library in his memory.

As a central training ground for the next generation of preparing men & women for ministry, the Steven R. Sylvester Memorial Library is the “heart of the institution.” South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary received a donation from the Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation in honor of Steven R. Sylvester. The library serves as a resource for academic excellence and spiritual strength for students and faculty.

Our Library currently has more than 17,000 books, videos, and audio CDs which are available to students and faculty. The library also makes table top PC and Apple computers available to all students and faculty during Library hours.

Students can access the library catalog not only from the school campus, but also from their home. By going through Populi students can access electronic peer reviewed journals, articles, and eBooks.

Library staff are available during library hours to aid students and faculty in locating resources for their research, homework, and academic studies. The library has quiet rooms allowing students to work in solitude or in small groups.

There are also circular nook tables in the public access area of the library which allows students to study in private or in small groups. The library is equipped with a printer to assist students in their printing of assignments.

FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR

We at the South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary Steven R. Sylvester Memorial Library promote information literacy. To that end, we have provided easy access to a wide range of books and Reference materials that include: Theological, Biblical, Counseling and Business-related books, CD’s, and DVD’s. The Library has both PC and MAC computers available to students, with Galaxie and ProQuest databases that students may access from school or home. It is our hope that you will use these excellent research tools to aid your studies so that you will become lifelong learners. There is power in information; however, we all must know how to retrieve that information properly from all different types of resources. To be well rounded in your studies, your intake of information must come from varied and reliable resources, both written and electronic. It is important to collaboratively design your research between what you learn from your professors, your textbooks, and in-depth research using the library in order to master disciplinary content and information literacy.

The Steven R. Sylvester Memorial Library at South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary has over 15,000 books in its Library Collection and is cataloged under the Dewey Decimal System that has a user-friendly numbering system allowing for easy access to all materials. Our Reference Section includes a variety of general and Biblically based atlases, commentaries, dictionaries, encyclopedias, Greek & Hebrew lexicons, and thesauri.  Our book range is from the 000 – 999’s in the Dewey Decimal System covering all subject areas. Although our Library is relatively small, you will discover it is specialized, the bulk of our research materials include: journals, CD’s, DVD’s, theological databases, and books that are in the 200’s – Religion range of Dewey.

We were proud to announce that in 2011 – 2012 our entire library collection had been updated and cataloged with The Follett-Destiny Library Catalog Services, an on-line database. The electronic card catalog is the index to all books, CD’s and DVD’s owned, inventoried, and circulated through the South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary Library. Our library collection can be easily accessed from the SFBC Library computers or from any computer with an Internet connection. The classrooms as well as our library have wireless access throughout.

Next door to the library is a student lounge where students may read at their leisure, have coffee, or interact with other students in discussion groups. You may also enjoy our quiet rooms or our theater room where DVD’s may be viewed, all located in the back of the Library. Most importantly, it is our hope that you will find our library a comfortable environment in which to learn, and a professional library staff ready to serve your information needs, by assisting students, faculty, and staff in answering any questions about the library, locating materials, and ultimately ascertaining information needed for research, whether it be written or electronic.

Please enjoy using the South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary Steven R. Sylvester Memorial Library as much as we have enjoyed planning it for your use, research and learning.
